EARTHQUAKES
CANNOT BE PREDICTED FALSE PROPHECIES CONDEMNED. UNNECESSARY ALARM CAUSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “At the present time a number of people appear to be unduly perturbed owing to prophecies which are supposed to have been made about forthcoming earthquakes,” said the actingDominion seismologist, Mr R. C. Hayes, today. “Sensible people will disregard such predictions entirely.” He said that the present state of seismological science makes the accurate prediction of earthquakes either as to locality or intensity mere guesswork. On rare occasions one of these guesses may come right, but for every fulfilled prediction there are at least 100 unfulfilled ones. It was foolish for people to take any notice of these prophecies. They only alarm themselves unnecessarily.
