VIRTUALLY BROKEN
GANDHI’S FAST.
DIFFERENT FU.OM PREVIOUS ONES (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, March 28. The Poona correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says Mahatma Gandhi’s self-imposed fast, which is due to end on Wednesday, was virtually broken on February 23. Gandhi for the previous 13 days had taken only two ounces of limejuice mixed with water; daily. The doctors on February 23 advised that he had reached the limit of his fasting capacity. Gandhi in the next 24 hours took 20 ounces of sweened lime apd orange juice, also medically treated. The Congress Party opponents’ allegation that it is a “phoney fast” are probably not justified, but the fast has differed from the previous ones when Gandhi took only salts dissolved in water. He improved on February 23, after which he reverted to two ounces of lime juice in water. Fourteen members of the Socialist Party picketed the New York City Hall demanding Mr Gandhi’s release because the Mayor, Mr La Guardia, did not permit them to picket the British Consulate. STRENGTH BEING MAINTAINED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) POONA, March 1. Gandhi’s strength is maintained. He is in goad spirits, says a medical bulletin. Gandhi was shaved yesterday for the first time since his fast began.
