KISKA BOMBED
ALL PLANES RETURN HOME. ’ SHIP SUNK IN SOLOMONS AREA. (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 1. A Navy communique announces: In the North Pacific during the afternoon of February 27, a force of heavy and medium bombers, escorted by fighters, attacked Japanese positions at Kiska. The results were not observed. All the United States planes returned. During the afternoon of February 28 enemy positions at Kiska were again attacked. Hits were observed on the camp area. All the United States planes returned. In the South Pacific on February 28, a Hudson patrol bomber bombed Munda. A force of Liberator heavy bombers and Avenger torpedo planes attacked Japanese shipping off Buin, and bombed enemy airfields at Kahili and Ballale. They hit an enemy cargo ship, which blew up and sank. Large fires were started at Kahili and Ballale. An enemy plane was destroyed on the ground. One United States plane failed to return. Dauntless dive-bombers, escorted by Lightnings and Wildcats, attacked Vila and started fires. All the United States planes returned.
