NEW SOVIET OFFENSIVE

SUCCESSES IN LAKE ILMEN AREA —————— { 302 Places Captured GERMAN COUNTER-ATTACKS IN UKRAINE SOME LOCAL GAINS REPORTED \ LONDON, March 1. A new Russian offensive is reported in the Lake Ilmen area, where 302 places have been captured, 8000 of the enemykilled and 3000 taken prisoner. Further German counter-attacks in the western end of the Donetz Basin have forced the Russians to give ground in some places. Mr Paul Winterton states that the Red Army has been attacking at high pressure for nearly 3| months now and in general, it looks as if Russia has decided to reduce speed to give time for preparing the next instalment of the offensive. Fierce fighting is still raging round the key railway junction towns of Kramatorskaya and Krasnoarmeisk. Strong German counterthrusts in the Kramatorskaya sector have had considerable local success. When the Russians captured Kramatorskaya they cut the railway serving the Nazi forces to and from the Donbas. The Germans launched a very big counter-attack and the Russians were unable to hold the peak of their thrust.
