CENTRAL SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. SATISFACTORY FINANCIAL POSITION. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held in the school last night. There were present: Messrs W. R. Nicol (chairman), S. V. Dixon, G. Bilderbeck, A. E. Nelson, T. A. Russell and A. I. Gibbs. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Masters and Butler. The financial statement which was adopted, showed . a satisfactory balance. The headmaster' (Mr Coddington) read his monthly report. This showed the roll number to be 599, with an average attendance of 93 per cent. The work of the school was being carried on under a modified timetable, allowance being made for visits to such places of interest as the Post Office, Freezing Works, Dairy Factory and Fairey’s Bakery. Two teachers had had time off for sickness. A further 24 merit certificates for home gardens had been awarded, making 30 in all. Ten sugarbags of onions had been harvested from the school garden and sold locally. A letter had been received from the hospital thanking the School Service Club for gifts to children in hospital. The children yesterday had given a very pleasing display of physical activities and a gathering of well over 100 parents had greatly appreciated the children’s work. The Dental Clinic was to be opened on Saturday by the Hon. Mr Nordmeyer. Matters connected with plumbing repairs at the East School were left in the hands of the headmaster. Messrs A. V. Dixon, G. Bilderbeck and W. L. Butler were appointed a visiting committee. _
