PARK CLUB SUCCESSFUL INNOVATION. COMPETITION GAMES. The green was in perfect condition on Saturday, and the excellent work done by the greenkeeper, Mr C. H. Dixon, was remarked upon by members and visitors alike. A new departure was instituted in the early games, in that the teams were reversed, and the leads were given an opportunity of skipping, and thereby gaining a deeper insight into the game. Altogether it was a pleasing innovation as well as an actual refresher course for the more experienced players, who were given a practical appreciation of team work in general. The main interest was centred in the Wall Cup game for colts. The challengers, Price, Bassett, Beattie, Werne (s), of the Masterton Club, were successful by defeating the holders, Garard, Stimpson, Edwards, Heath (s), of the Park Club, 19/17, after a very interesting and evenly-contested game. Masterton led 12/5 on the 12th end, but a 5 to Park on the following end considerably reduced the difference. On the 18th end the scores were-16 all. In. presenting the cup to the Masterton skip, the president, Mr Osborne, expressed the hope that now a start had been made with the challenges, that many games would ’be played before the end of the season. During the week the Masterton Club’s representatives, W. Palamontain and H. Freeman (s) were successful in the Mutrie Cup match against the holders, H. Carr and A. Osborne (s) by 24/16, There was a large gallery present and splendid bowling was witnessed. It is hoped that many more such games will ensue. Masterton took the lead early, the board reading 19/5 in their favour on the 11th end, but two fours to Park had reduced this to 21/14 on the 16th, whilst there was a difference of six on the 19th. Champion singles: H. Smith beat Macpherson, 18/12. This game was very evenly contested until the 16th end when Smith led 12/11. Spackman beat McErlick, 19/21; Faulknor beat Edwards, 24/9; H. Smith beat Reader, 19/11. Craft Medals: The blacksmiths, McErlick, P. Smith, Anstice, Shearer (s) defeated the butchers, Heath, Moore, E. Brown, G. Brown (s), 24/18. Home Guard Buttons: The Mortar Platoon (Edwards, Dugdale, Reid, Wallace, s.) defeated the Petrol Guards (Watson, Drummond, Faulknor, Vincent, s.) 18/16, after a very keen game. The guards led 12/6 on the 13th end, but the heavy artillery soon found the range and did some big scoring on the next three ends to take the lead for the first time, 14/12. The game then resolved itself into a dour, struggle, the guards again taking the lead on the 19th end, 16/15, but Wallace came to light on the next two ends to take the trophies. This competition should certainly become very popular. MASTERTON CLUB FINAL CHAMPION PAIRS. NOTES BY “THE BOWLER.” The final of the champion pairs of the Masterton Club was played on Saturday last between F. Mills and W. Reid (s) and L. Wylie and G. Beecroft (s). The game was a most interesting one, as the play by the leads and skips was exceptionally good, in fact, for the first 12 heads, I have never seen better bowling in a pairs competition. The green was in excellent order, and was most favourably commented on by all the players. The game concluded on the . 20th head, the score board showing Reid 22, and Beecroft 12. The details of the match are as follow:—On the sth head, Reid was leading by 3 points, but on the Bth head, the scores mere even, 6 all. The scores were again even on the 11th head, 9 all. Reid had a lead of 4 points on the 15th head, and this was increased to 6 points on the 17th head, the score board showing Reid 17, Beecroft 11. In the next 3 heads Reid put on 5 points, and Beecroft' 1 point, and the game ended by Reid winning with a margin of 10 points. My congratulations are extended to Mills and Reid on their meritorious performance in winning the club s champion pairs. I must also congratulate Wylie and Beecroft on their fine display, not only during this match, but also throughout the whole of the competition. McCullough memorial trophy The competition for the McCullough Memorial Trophy will close on Thursday, March 18, leaving 6 games still to be played. The position of the leading players, including the game on Thursday last, is: W. Christian, 13 wins; C. Perry, M. Doughty and G. Blane, 10 wins each.
