REVEALING PHRASES
FRENCH & THEIR GERMAN NEIGHBOURS. French people know their German neighbours so well that their dislike of the Germans is found even in their language. An unjustified, picked quarrel is called by the French a “querelle d’Allemand,” or “A German’s quarrel.” To pull the chestnuts out of the fire to the advantage of another person is referred to as: “Travailler pour le roi de Prusse,” or “To work for the king of Prussia.” The French do not forget that a Bismarck falsified a despatch in order to make war between Prussia and France inevitable, or that the Kaiser, and then Hitler Germany—the leopard cannot change his spots—prepared a war of destruction against France while professing peaceful intentions. Laval, who today is trying to make his countrymen believe that Germans are other than the enemies of France, is wasting his time. Even the poor devils who, to save their skins and preserve their families from reprisals, have to write his bidding in the Nazicontrolled French newspapers do not believe a word of what they write.
