NAZI METHODS
+ IN TRYING TO RAISE GERMAN BIRTH RATE. A recent 8.8. C. German broadcastaddressed more especially to the women—gave the figures of German losses in Russia. Dead or permanently disabled amount to four and a half millions. The same transmission quoted the ‘“Frankfurter Zeitung’s” statement that the birth rate in Hitler's war time Germany has sunk to a lower level than it did in the last war. The decline in the first four months of 1942 totals 120,000 births, a drop of twentyfour per cent. The broadcast pointed out that the more territory Hitler Occupies, the fewer Germans will remain to populate the extended Lebens--I’aum. To counterbalance the falling birth rate, the Nazis are introducing new laws to cover children born out of wedlock. A decree has been in force for several months in Holland and Norway specifying State benefits for the unmarried mother and her child—of a German father. It appears that this decree is now to extend to other occupied countries. State provision for this “stud” morality is far-reaching and embraces considerable financial support—at the discretion of the Reich Commissioner, and be it noted, the Military Courts.
