LYAUTEY OF MOROCCO
GREAT FRENCH COLONIAL ADMINISTRATOR. Marshal Lyautey, pacifier of Morocco, was a great admirer of British colonial administration, as he was of British letters. In a ring he wore he had an inscription of a line of Shelley, “The joy of life is in action.” When he left Morocco for the last time to return to France, two British warships steamed out from Gibraltar and escorted for many hours the ship bearing him back to France, a compliment to the great coloniser which he keenly appreciated. In 1912, after occupying Fez, he sent invitations to all the Europeans to meet him. An English missionary, Miss Denison, was surprised not to be
invited. Next day Marshal Lyautey, accompanied by his staff, penetrated the native quarters where she had carried out her good work for many years and called on her to pay his respects in person. It was the gesture of a gentleman and a mark of his admiration of her courage and good deeds.
