MADE BY RUSSIAN FORCES IN UKRAINE IMPORTANT CENTRE CAPTURED. .*■ 8000-TON TRANSPORT SUNK. LONDON, February 23. The Russians have made another deep penetration in the Ukraine and have captured the important manufacturing town and railway centre of Sumy, 80 miles north-west of Kharkov. The Russians have also captured two towns on the railway between Sumy and Kharkov. Progress has also been made in the Kursk region. An 8000-ton enemy transport has been sunk in the Barents Sea. POWERFUL FORCES THREAT TO DNEPROPETROVSK AND OTHER PLACES. FURTHER RUSSIAN PROGRESS. (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON, February 23. Concentrating powerful forces on a 150-miles front, based on Pavlograd, Krasnograd and Trostyanets, the Russians have pierced deeply into the Ukraine, threatening Dnepropretrovsk by this pincers. They have also broken into the German defences south of Orel and despite a thaw in some regions and blizzards in others they are maintaining activity on a 900-mile stretch. The British United Press correspondent at Moscow says the Russians are developing a movement against Dnepropetrovsk from the south where they are within 20 miles of the Sinelikovo railway junction, the loss of which would further imperil the chances of the withdrawal of the German southern armies. Russians northwards are thrusting from Krasnograd towards the Dnieper, simultaneously menacing Poltava. After strengthening the right flank in an advance towards Poltava, by the capture of villages west of Graivoron, the Russians are pressing from Trostyanets along the railway to Sumy, additionally menacing Byolopoyle, another junction of the German lateral railway system.
