SERIOUS CHARGE
WELLINGTON WOMAN BEFORE COURT. MAGISTRATE REFUSES BAIL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Strong opposition to the granting of bail was made 'in the Magistrate's Court today by Detective Sergeant McLennan, when Mary Ann Wearne, aged 60, a domestic, was charged with wilfully using an instrument, with intent to procure a miscarriage. Counsel’s application was made after the police had asked for a week’s remand, counsel saying that accused was a well-known resident of Wellington and owned freehold property. Detective-Sergeant McLennan said the girl concerned was only fifteen years old and had been admitted to a hospital late last night. Bail was refused.
