PHYSICAL EDUCATION DISPLAYS IN MASTERTON. TO COMMENCE ON MARCH 1. In order to allow parents and others interested an opportunity of seeing what is being done in the schools in connection with the physical welfare of the children, a physical education week will be held in Masterton, commencing on Monday, March 1. The displays are sponsored by the senior inspector, Mi’ Stubbs, and controlled by Mr P. A. Smithells, N.Z. Superintendent of Physical Education, whose assistants, Miss Taylor (organiser) and Miss Sewell, have been in the district since the commencement of the term. At 2 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week displays will be staged by Central, West and Lansdowne respectively in their own grounds, whilst at 2 p.m. on Thursday there will be a display by the combined schools ■ (including Whatman, Solway and Te Ore Ore) on the Park Oval. This latter display will feature ball games, folk dancing, life-saving, Maori stick games, hakas, and rhythmic exercises, and there will be a special squad consisting of representathe upper forms of the various schools to demonstrate a typical physical education lesson. At all sessions a commentary will be given by means of a loud-speaker. Activities appropriate to each division of the school will be displayed, and there should be much of interest for all. There has been wide discussion on the modern trends in physical education in the schools, and all will be afforded an opportunity of seeing why this period in the school timetable has become so popular with the pupils. On Thursday evening, March 5, Mr Smithells will conduct a session fot teachers and parents, at which motion pictures, showing what is being done in the schools of England, will be screened. These splendid films are an education in themselves, and a further announcement will be made later. Friday will be devoted to a refresher course for teachers of Masterton and the surrounding district.
