♦ — “FLAME OF NEW ORLEANS.” Playing the first romantic role of his long screen career, Bruce Cabot is the capable male lead opposite the glamorous Marlene Dietrich in “The Flame of New Orleans,” which will be shown tonight. As the background of this production is the gay city of New Orleans during the 50’s, with its fop-pishly-dressed men and extravagantlygowned women, Marlene Dietrich is the one screen actress capable of wearing the necessary period dresses with such unassuming grace. In direct contrast to her former dramatic performances, Miss Dietrich is highly amusing in this fresh and romantic comedy, being cast as Clare Ledeux, an adventuress who came to New Orleans in 1841 to try her luck, impersonating a cloistered and slightly bewildered European noblewoman. She accepts a proposal of marriage from Roland Young, the town’s wealthiest bachelor,. but finds herself actually in love with Bruce Cabot, who has the part of a handsome rough-neck skipper. Complications arise in rapid succession as she continues to lead her double life, playing one party against the other. Roland Young, as usual, supplies the element of humour in the film.
