The pig has always seemed to us the most complacent of animals. But then we have never studied him psychologically. How wrong we were! A speaker, Dr. Donald, in the 8.8. C. overseas service the other day, gave quite another picture of pig temperament. A pig, he said, has a very strong possessive instinct, and will turn on his brothers and sisters if they attempt to trespass on his preserves. He is also very sensitive and’easily offended. Someone, he declared, has even claimed that if a pig is trained to expect certain things to happen as a routine, and he is suddenly disappointed, he is likely to have a nervous breakdown.
