CHINESE SUCCESSES

AGAINST JAPANESE FORCES. MANY CASUALTIES INFLICTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, February 21. A Chinese High Command communique, issued in Chungking, says that the Japanese forces which have been trying to extend their grip on the Burma Road in western Yunnan were driven back after attempting on the third successive day to cross the Salween River. Many casualties were inflicted on the enemy, and the Chinese also suffered losses. The Japanese attempt to smash the Chinese resistance in northern Kiangsu has been foiled. The Chinese withdrew ahead of converging enemy columns and carried out a counter-encirc ; ling movement. They are at present sandwiching the Japanese with considerable success.
