WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
UPPER PLAIN MEETING. INTERESTING DEMONSTRATIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) ■ The Upper Plain Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting at the residence of Mrs J. Gillespie, Kibblewhite Road. Delegates were appointed to attend the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Federation at Carterton on April 16. Mrs F. Clark will take charge of the supper arrangements at the Anzac Club on March 16. Mrs P. R. Welch gave an interesting talk on the drying of beans for winter use. A new boiling water method for preserving fruit without sugar was also demonstrated and fully explained. Members were keenly interested, and Mrs Welch was heartily thanked. A box from the G.A.R office at Massey College, “the home dyeing of wool,”was displayed at the meeting. Among the contents were many beautiful shades of wool, the dyes for which had been obtained from lichens, leaves, bark, etc. Mrs W. James was present and spoke briefly on matters dealing with the activities of the Country Women’s Branch of the Red Cross Society. The competition for best bloom resulted: Mrs Mannell 1, Mrs W. Taplin 2, Mrs Laing 3.
