UNDER ONE PER CENT
SINKINGS OF ALLIED SHIPS IN SOUTH ATLANTIC BUT MENACE STILL VERY GRAVE. 1 DETERMINATION TO ELIMINATE RAIDERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) i (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) NEW YORK, February 21. The United Press Brazil correspondent states that Vice-Admiral Jonas Ingram, commanding the United States South Atlantic naval forces said that the sinkings of Allied shipping tonnage, crossing the South Atlantic section patrolled by United States warships was less than one per cent. He gave a warning that the submarine menace was still very grave and the utmost co-operation, not only of Britain and American but of Brazil and other Latin American Allies was necessary for the task of the elimination of undersea raiders. He added: “We attack the enemy whenever we can. We never had a defensive policy nor are we contented merely with getting shipping past the submarine traps. We are out to eliminate the enemy wherever and whenever possible. Allied surface forces and air strength are constantly increasing . The Brazilian air force is co-operating fully. The war is not over yet, as some seem to think. It really has just begun.”
