PRODUCTION IN CANADA
GREAT INCREASES PLANNED THIS YEAR. OTTAWA, February 12. In the factory and on the farm Canadian production is aiming at still higher objectives. The index of the physical volume of business, as computed by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, rose 22 per cent during 1942, the index of production rose 38 per cent and the index of the labour force in manufacturing plants gained nearly 23 per cent. With the exception of wheat and cheese, food production objectives for 1943 all show a considerable increase over 1942. Here are a few figures from the 1943 food objectives with the percentage increase or decrease over 1942: a . Hogs, 8,000,000 head, 28 per cent increase. Cattle, 1,220,000 head, 9 per cent increase. Fluid milk, 18,500,000,000 pounds, 6 per cent increase. Powdered milk, 16,000,000 pounds, 41 per cent increase. Butter, 322,000,000 pounds, 15 per cent increase. Cheese, 200,000,000 pounds, no change. Eggs, 345,000,000 dozen, 29 per cent increase. Wheat, 17,696,000 acres, 18 per cent decrease. Oats, 15,367,000, 12 per cent increase. Sugar beets, 90,000 acres, 42 per cent increase. . Soya beans, 90,000 acres, 91 per cent increase. Honey, maximum possible. It is estimated that Canada s Special Products Board must purchase an average of 800 car loads of eggs monthly during the next six months to meet British orders for dried eggs.
