RAM FAIR
BUYERS SHOW DISCRIMINATION FOR GOOD QUALITY LINES. STUD ROMNEY BRINGS 65GNS. Buyers showed keen discrimination for good quality lots at the first day of the Masterton A. and P. Association’s ram fair at the Solway Showgrounds yesterday. Any line which did not meet with the buyers’ approval received little attention. The top price in flock Romneys, 25 gns., for a pen of four rams, was realised by Mr J. E. Hewitt. Mr Hewitt’s entry won first prize for the best show pen. Last year the top price of the first day was 55gns. Mr E. E. White paid 65 guineas, the top price at yesterday’s sale, for a true to breed stud Romney ram offered by Messrs J. G. and I. R. Donald. Inspectors appointed by the Romney Breeders’ Association carried out good work in inspecting the flock rams. Mr J. C. Bidwill’s run of 49 maiden two-shear rams averaged £8 6s 6d, which was about the same as last year’s average for his offering. Sales are:— FLOCK RAMS ROMNEYS. A/c C. C. Bidding was brisk in the early stages. Competition was particularly keen for a splendid ram offered by Mr Norman McLachlan, Rangitumau. Show pen results are: G. Allen 1, A. P. Southey 2, N. H. McLachlan 3. Up to the time of taking the luncheon adjournment prices were reported to be the best for several years, and as good for any Southdown fairs held this year in the North Island. Bidding was exceedingly keen and many rams were bought by buyers for other districts. Any line which showed quality was keenly sought after. The rams offered on account of Mr Norman H. McLachlan and Messrs R. Dysant and Sons made particularly good prices. The rams were beautifully bred and were splendid examples of the Southdown breed. They were brought out in first class order. Mr P. G. Ramsay extended a welcome to members of the United States armed forces. A collection was taken up on behalf
of the Blind Institute. On the first day £lOO was raised and £77 was raised this morning. Sales are: SHOW PENS. A/c G. E. Allen: 4 at 23gns., R. Bayliss. A/c A. P. Southey: 4 at 16gns., D., Buchanan.
