BRILLIANT SERVICE

ECHO OF EL ALAMEIN FIGHTING BAR TO D.S.O. AWARDED TO BRIGADIER INGLIS. COMMANDER OF NEW ZEALAND DIVISION. | (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) ' RUGBY, February 18. An echo of the El Alamein fighting last summer was heard in the announcement of an award of a bar to the D. 5.0., to Brigadier L. M. Inglis, of the New Zealand military force, “for most brilliant service and brilliant leadership while in temporary command of the Second New Zealand Division.” 'The citation says: “He took over the command at the close of the battle of Minquarquaim on January 27, 1942 and was responsible for extricating, the Division from a covering position that night. He directed the successful withdrawal on to the El Alamein line and immediately carried out the reorganisation of the division for the fighting which followed and at once stabilised the position. During the whole period he displayed great skill and determination, his personal direction and courage being a constant inspiration to everyone under his command.” A commando raid on Rommel’s headquarters at Sidi Rafa last winter is recalled in a dramatic account of a reconnaissance behind the enemy lines, which gains a bar to the M.C. for Lieutenant-Colonel J. E. Haselden, of the Intelligence Corps.
