DEBATE ON BEVERIDGE PLAN SOME MODIFICATION LIKELY LABOUR MEMBERS EXPRESS DISSATISFACTION. (By Telegraph-Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, February 16. The three-days debate on the Beveridge plan for social security began in the House of Commons today. The Lord President of the Council, Sir John Anderson, said that the Government welcomed the Beveridge plan, accepted it in principle, and would introduce legislation as soon aS possible to carry out many of its proposals, but he warned the House that its financial aspects were formidable and that no one could say now with any certainty what the financial position of the country would be at the end of the war. While the general lines for the development of social services laid down in the Beveridge Report were those the Government wished to follow, all the main features did not commend themselves equally, he said. After the statement Labour members met to consider their attitude. They have tabled an amendment expressing their dissatisfaction with the Government’s proposals and urging them to re-consider them. A correspondent says that the Labour members are not alone in. asking for more specific promises from the Government, but it is doubtful whether there will be a debate.
