FURTHER ADVANCE
ON MARETH DEFENCES ANTICIPATED IN LONDON. FAID POSITION REPORTED UNDER CONTROL. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.0 a.m.) RUGBY, February 16. The British forces are 20 miles inside Tunisia, and 60 miles from the main Mareth defences. Ben Gardane, the first place to be reached across the frontier, is a road centre and was a fortified outpost of the Mareth Line. Its capture is believed in London to be the prelude to a further - advance on the Mareth positions. A North Africa communique states: “Heavy fighting has continued west of Faid, with armoured forces engaged. Enemy aircraft on an aerodrome near Kairouan were bombed and set on fire. Eleven enemy fighters were destroyed in combat. “Flying Fortresses bombed Palermo and scored hits on the dock area, an oil tank and a large vessel. Wellingtons bombed Bizerta. Three of our aircraft are missing. “The Faid position is reported to be under control.”
