Mrs Morton, Palmerston North, is the guest of Mrs Carey, Lansdowne, i Mrs J. M. Andrew, “Awanui,” Wha-' reama, is visiting her mother, Mrs H. B. Dyer, Tauranga. Mrs F. R. Bodie, Tauranga, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs G. W. Sellar, Colombo Road, Masterton. The death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital on Sunday of Mr Samuel Pike, a well-known Pahiatua resident, at the age of 74 years. Lord Gowrie, Governor-General of Australia, has been informed that his only son, the Hon A. H. P. Hore-Ruth-ven, of the Rifle Brigade, died on Christmas Eve in an Italian hospital in Libya. Appreciative reference to the public service rendered by the late Mr J. C. Ewington was made by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Ewington and family. Three Hamilton public officials hold New Zealand records for long services. Mr H. T. Gillies has had the longest term in the office of Crown solicitor, having had 32 years’ service. Mr M. McCormack is the oldest bailiff in New Zealand, with 41 years’ service, and Constable H. M. Kirby, Hamilton East, has served in the police force for 42 years. Reference to the death of Mr J. C. Ewington was made at today’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. The chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley, said Mr Ewington was a member of the board from 1903 to 1938. While on the board Mr Ewington ‘did a lot of useful work, said Mr Mawley. The hospital, the comfort of the patients and the just administration of charitable aid were Mr Ewington’s first considerations. In his passing the town had lost a valuable citizen, said Mr Mawley.
