AMERICAN AIR ATTACK IN SOLOMONS HEAVY JAPANESE LOSSES IN GUADALCANAL. NEW GUINEA OPERATIONS. LONDON, February 14. lii the Solomons, United States aircraft have attacked Japanese shore positions and shipping in the Shortland Island area. A bomb ' hit a Japanese cargo vessel. Eight Japanese fighters were shot down out of 45 aircraft for the loss of six American machines. Four of the American planes were shot down by. enemy planes and two were destroyed by anti-aircraft fire. In the attacks which drove the Japanese out of Guadalcanal Island United State’s forces killed over 6,000 of the enemy and took 127 prisoners. The United Press Association says the communique figures make the total nearly 15,000 Japanese reported killed on Guadalcanal in communiques during the whole campaign. In New Guinea the remnants of the Japanese force which was smashed in an attack on Wau are nearly back to their starting point, 30 miles away.
