NAVY LEAGUE

LADIES’ AUXILIARY ! MEETING IN MASTERTON. GARMENTS FOR SEAMEN. The monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Navy League was held yesterday, Mrs S. R. Gawith presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. McKenzie Douglas, J. C. Forsyth, D. Buchanan, H. Beetham, A. Caselberg, C. Deans, S. Fletcher, E. C. White, P. J. Borthwick and Miss McLaren. The wool committee reported that three local men had been supplied with comforts during the month and that 62 garments had been packed ready for transport to Wellington. Information was received that the permit granted to the Navy League by the Dominion Rationing Controller last September for the purchase of seamen’s garments, coupon free, for six months, had been extended to cover a further period of six months. Clothing purchased under the permit is sent in monthly consignments to the Mission to Seamen in Wellington for distribution to seamen who have lost their belongings through enemy action. The committee is very grateful to all those who have given donations in money for this purpose and also to those who have provided clothing, new or (Secondhand, for those men, whose need is very great. Advice has been received from the Missioner that a few sets of pyjamas would be appreciated for men in hospital. Miss Guild (the Navy League representative on the Mayoress’s Patriotic Committee) reported having attended meetings of that body. She stated that reading matter was urgently needed for troops overseas and asked that anyone having magazines or small books to spare should leave them at the Town Clerk’s office or at the Patriotic Society’s room in Dixon Street.
