j WHEAT CROPS HARVESTING OPERATIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The harvesting of wheat crops here has commenced. In one instance the owner is having his crop stripped which will certainly dispense with the problem of obtaining labour which is very acute in this locality. A paddock of approximately twenty acres was recently cut and stocked, but as a result of the fierceness of a gale every stook was razed to the ground. Fruit Trees Damaged. k > A north-westerly gale of great violence raged in the district a few days ago and caused considerable damage to fruit trees in particular. Project Dropped. It was reported recently that a sawmilling company intended to erect a mill here for the purpose of cutting pinus insigrius. It is now understood that the project has been dropped. Eels Plentiful. Eels are being netted at the Lake Ferry in large quantities. A party of local residents had a most successful fishing expedition at Cape Palliser recently when a gdod haul of groper and other fish were obtained. Personal Items. 1 There was a large attendance at a gathering at which Mr lan Sutherland, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Gilbert Sutherland, was the guest of honour. Mr lan Sutherland is a member of the Air Force. Mr F. Lovegrove on behalf of the residents of the district, presented Mr Sutherland with a gift and expressed the best wishes for his future happiness and safety. Mr Sutherland suitably responded. An opportunity was also taken to make a presentation, on behalf of the local patriotic committee, to Mr Stan Thomas, who will leave shortly for an Air Force camp in the South Island. Mr Lovegrove spoke in eulogistic terms of the work of Mr Thomas as an officer of the Postal Department. Mr Thomas expressed his thanks to the committee for their presentation. The prizes at euchre were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs McKenzie, 1; Mrs Hapi Sutherland, 2. Men: Mr Tot Burling, 1; Mr J. Duggan, 2. The Monte Carlo dance was i won by Mr and Mrs Karaitiana. Mr S. Mclntosh was M.C., and Mr T. Matenga supplied the music, extras being played by Miss I. TeWhai'ti and Mr C. Carter. Mrs Chaytor, Taumarunui, is staying with her daughter, Mrs S. Thomas. Miss Kathleen Gill, Blenheim, is the guest of Mrs Tilson, Te Kopi. Mrs Gilbert Sutherland was the guest of Mrs I. Tilson for a few days. Mrs H. Lovegrove is staying with Mrs F. Lovegrove prior to leaving for Whangarei, where her husband was recently transferred. Miss Ora Neil is staying with Mrs Fred Busch for a few days. Mrs J. Bragg is visiting the Hawke’s Bay district. Mrs M. Waiwera has returned from a visit to relatives in Wanganui. Miss Fisher, Carterton, has taken up |ier duties as assistant at the local school. Miss Merlet is the head teacher. Mr and Mrs E. Taurau will shortly leave Pirinoa to take up their residence at Dannevirke. The many friends of Mr J. Phillips, Wellington, will be pleased to learn that his health Ips shown a decided improvement. Mr J. Simpson has been visiting relatives here. Miss Tim Enoka has returned from a visit to Feilding. Private Douglas Kitney was a visitor to Pirinoa at the weekend.
