CARTERTON

OBITUARY MR EVANDER LEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) After an illness extending over many months, the death occurred on Saturday morning, at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr F. J. Rawlings, Broadway, of Mr Evander Lee, at the age of 86 years. The late Mr Lee was born at Upper Hutt, and lived in that district for many years before coming to Carterton. where* he was mostly employed at Messrs Booth and Co.’s sawmill and in bush work. Familiarly known as “Bun” Lee, he possessed a quiet, unasuming nature, and he made many friends during his residence of some 62 years in the Carterton district. He is survived by five daughters and two sons, his wife and two daughters having predeceased him. The surviving members of the family are Messrs F. A. S. Lee (Andersons Line), V. H. Lee (Carrington), Mesdames F. J. Rawlings (Carterton), H. Healy (Palmerston North), J. Nilsen (Carterton), W. Smith (Matarawa), and V. Dixon (Auckland). There are 29 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren. The funeral took place at Clareville Cemetery today. BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS. ' Despite the sweltering heat and a fiery green, five rinks of Carterton bowlers had a pleasant afternoon’s play on Saturday. Two games in the championship rinks were played. Afternoon tea was presided over by Mesdames Newbould and A. Thompson, to whom a vote of thanks was accorded. The games resulted as follows: — Champion rinks: Pankhurst, Stevens,; Simmonds, Sorensen (s), beat Smith, McCarty Curtis, Hart (s), 23/18; Booth, Colson, "Newbould, Riggs (s) beat Clarke, L. DeLacey, C. DeLacey, Tucker (s), 29/14. ' Friendly games: Taylor, W. Hart, Barr (s) beat Foss, Kilmister, Whyte (s), 21/15; E. H. Smith, Daysh, King (s) beat Beaven, Hawker, Stent (s), 29/19; Hall, Spooner, Hughan (s) beat Harp, Edwards, Martin (s), 18/13. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School will be held tonight in the Holloway Street school at 7.30 o’clock. Personal. Mr T. G. Underhill, who has been an inmate of the Masterton Hospital, has returned to Carterton. Mr P. L. Darke, of Paraparaumu, who had been the guest of Mr and Mrs T. T. Hughes, has returned home. Mr and Mrs S. Hill, Wakelin Street, are visiting Napier. Mr H. M. B. Trapp, who had been an inmate of Croydon Hospital, as the result of an accident, is able to get about again. REGENT THEATRE “IT STARTED WITH EVE.” “It Started With Eve,” a delightful comedy-drama, will be finally shown tonight. Deanna Durbin is heard at her best, while Charles Laughton and Robert Cummings also have leading .roles.
