FRENCH INTENTION
CALCULATING MACHINE’S 300th ANNIVERSARY. The calculating machine was invented 300 years ago by Blaise Pascal, one of the greatest thinkers the world has ever known. He was only 19 when he invented .his calculating machine, of which he made fifty models before being successful. British and French scientists met recently to commemorate the event. Professor Chapman reminded those present that the great French thinker at the age of only sixteen, carried geometry its first steps forward since the time of the Greeks. M. Rene Cassin, member of the French National Committee in London, thanked the many British and Sweedes present —Pascal made a present of his calculating machine to Queen Christine of Sweden in 1652—f0r their participation in honouring the memory of the great Frenchman.
