CARTERTON
* FIRE ON RACECOURSE WOOD AND GRASS DESTROYED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Members of the Carterton Fire Brigade were called to a fire at the Clareville Racecourse yesterday which they quickly put out. Part of a heap of wood and a fair area of grass were destroyed. Building Society. Mr. L. H. Smart presided over a meeting of the Wairarapa Terminating Building So- * ciety when two ballots were held. The first, for £6OO, was won by Mr. W. E. Arcus, Martinborough, and the second by Mr. N. V. Goodin, Te Kauwhata, Waikato. Personal Items. A number of the clients of the Bank of New Zealand met yesterday afternoon and made a presentation to Mr. C. C. Callender, the popular manager, who left this morning to take up his duties at the Inglewood branch of the Bank of New Zealand. In presenting Mr. Callender with fa beautifully upholstered chair from the clients of the bank and friends, Mr. George Brown wished Mr. and Mrs. Callender the best of good health and good fortune. Mr. Callender suitably returned thanks on behalf of Mrs. Callender and himself. Word has been received that Alan Golden, cf Carterton, has received his commission in the Roval Air Force in Canada. Prior to her departure for Inglewood the members of the Ladies' Bowling Club entertained Mrs. C. C. Callender at the Club's pavilion. Mrs. W. Martin asked Mrs Callender. who was the first president of the club, to accept a small gift. Mr. P. L. Beere, of the Wairarapa Automobile Association staff, will leave on a fortnight’s holiday on Tuesday next. Mrs. T. A. Garrett, of Belvedere, has received word that her son, Private John Garrett, has arrived at his destination and is fit and well. — , REGENT THEATRE - “THE FLEET’S IN.” Tonight’s programme is headed by the big comedy picture, “The Fleet s In, the leading roles of which are in the hands of Dorothy Lamour and William Holden.
