LINKS IMPERILLED

RUSSIANS SWEEPING FORWARD. SCORES OF STRONG POINTS DESTROYED. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) < LONDON, January 29. Developing thrusts against German lateral communications, the Red armies have broadened their drives, imperilling the link between Hitler’s hedgehogs of Kursk and Kharkov. General Vlatutin’s wings northward and southward of Voronezh have now joined hands and are sweeping forward along a 200-mile' line.' It is estimated that

German losses during the last 24 hours are equivalent to a division. Moscow correspondents say that the Russian advance which has resulted in the capture of Kastornoye, is coordinated with the s'outhern progress. During the last 48 hours the Russians have advanced nearly 15 miles, destroying scores of strong points. They are now driving towards Staryoshol. A special Moscow announcement reports the capture of Kavkaskaya and that pressure* is increasing against Tikhoretsk. These railway junctions are important for Russian operations aimed at putting the Germans south of Rostov “in the bag.” Another Soviet force, advancing from the west, captured Kurganaya and is now approaching Ustlabinskaya. The Russians are also reported to be 20 miles east of the Tikhorestsk-Kavkaskaya Railway.
