Miss Margaret C. Gaskin of Masterton is spending a holiday in Wellington. f Mr and Mrs Owen Jones, Masterton, have returned from a visit to North Canterbury. Mr and Mrs S. W.'Smith, of Lansdowne, have returned from a visit to Seatoun, Wellington. Mrs. Peter Hawksworth has returned to Masterton after having spent a holiday in Hawke’s Bay. The death occurred yesterday at Palmerston North of Mr. Francis Rowse, formerly of Mako Mako, Forty Mile Bush, at the age of 87 years. Among the successful candidates who recently passed the matriculation examination was Miss Nancy Matthews, of Mt Bruce, Masterton. The friends of Mrs. S. Flaws, Lower Hutt, and formerly of Masterton, will be pleased to learn that she is making satisfactory progress after her recent operation at the Masterton Hospital. The engagement is announced of Joan Evelyn, eldest daughter of Mr and'Mrs J. Buchanan, Vogeltown, Wellington, to Erol, eldest son of Mr and Mrs R. Reeves, Queen Street, Masterton. A quiet wedding was celebrated recently at Lansdowne by the Rev. D. McNeur, the contracting parties being Miss'Gwen Blackley, youngest daughter of Mrs. and the late Mr. J. Blackley, of Masterton, and Mr. Wallace Brown, of Palmerston North. R.N.Z.N.V.R. personnel who have been promoted to temporary acting sub-lieutenants, a London cablegram reports, are: S. Burley, T. K. Fallwell, A, W. Worth, and B. A. Hunter, Auckland; H. P. Anderson, Wellington; C. S. Turnbull, Timaru; T. M. Sunderland, Havelock North; also A. W. Woodhouse, B. M. Simpson, and C. D. Mowat, members of a special branch; R. B. Smith, L. M. Hadley, and D. G. Francis, Wellington; and P. M. Priest, Palmerston North.
