CARTERTON
MAGISTRATES COURT CASES DEALT WITH YESTERDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Carterton Court yesterday. In the case of the Carterton Borough Council against C. Blake, a claim for £2 19s lOd, judgment was given by default for plaintiff. In a judgment summons case, S. J. O’Connor v. G. W. Clark, a claim for £lO 2s 6d, defendant was ordered to pay the amount forthwith, in default 10 days’ imprisonment. L. J. Williams was charged that on October 31, 1942, he did sell intoxicating liquor to a member of the Armed Forces, Pte. H. K. Mackintosh, when he was in uniform, for consumption elsewhere than on the premises where it was sold. The case was adjourned from last court day. C. E. Larsen, licensee of the Club Hotel, was similarly charged. The Magistrate reserved his decision in both cases. H. Steel was charged that, on November 28 ,as licensee of the Royal Oak Hotel, he sold liquor to persons not lawfully entitled to be, supplied, at a time when the premises should have been closed under the Licensing Act Emergency Regulations, 1942, No. 2. He was also charged with having opened the hotel for the sale of liquor when it should have been closed. Mr R. McKenzie, who appeared for accused, cited a similar case that had been heard in another district, and upon which decision was reserved. He asked that the present case be adjourned until this decision had been given. Mr Lawry adjourned the case as requested. The traffic inspector, Mr A. E. Ansell, proceeded against L. Stewart for having exceeded the speed limit with a service bus on the Greytown-Martin-borough main highway. A fine of £2, with costs 10s, was imposed. Leslie Duncan, Daniel Toomey, service bus drivers, and V. Maguire were fined £1 and 10s costs each for speeding. Duncan and Toomey pleaded that they had no speedometers on their cars, and that they were unprocurable. The magistrate said that the regulations had been framed to conserve petrol and wear and tear on tires. The traffic of-, fleer stated that he had no difficulty in obtaining speedometers. Personal Items. The friends of Mrs J. McCann, of Car- ’ terton, will be pleased to learn that her health is showing an improvement after her serious illness. ' . Mrs W. Hart. Palmerston North, who had been the guest of Mrs C. Barnett, ' of South Carterton, returned home to- 1 j day. On Tuesday evening the executive of • the Carterton Branch of the Returned 1 Services Association made a presentation of a small occasional table to Mr 1 and Mrs C. C. Callender, who are leaving for Inglewood. The president, Mr F. L Barr, referred to the services rendered to the local branch of the R.S.A., by Mr and Mrs Callender over a number of years, and extended to them the Association’s best wishes for their future health and happiness. Messrs C. A. Chennells (vice-president) and A. T. Murray (past president) also spoke in eulogistic tei-ms of the'help always giv- t en so willingly to the R.S.A. by Mr and e Mrs Callender.
