Apples for School Children. The Education Department has informed the Wellington Education Board that the apples-in-schools scheme will be continued this year.
Swimming Championships. One hundred and fifty-seven entries have been received for the North Island swimming championships, which will be competed for at Hamilton on January 27 and 28. Miss B. Casey (Wellington), New Zealand junior champion, will defend two of her titles.
Crops Inspected. An inspection of some of the wheat and oat crops in the Westbush RoadUpper Plain district was made by the members of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board (Napier), yesterday afternoon. The members, who were shown round the areas by Mr R. W. Kebbell, chairman of the Wairarapa Primary Production Council, expressed themselves as being most favourably impressed with what they had seen. Two exceptionally fine oat crops were admired on the properties of Mr B. V. Skeet and M. Butler. Air Training Corps;
The weekly routine orders for bio. 21 Squadron, Air Training Corps, Masterton, state: —Parades, Sunday, January 31, at 1.30 p.m., Municipal Hall, Masterton; Monday, February 1, and Thursday, February 4, at 6.50 p.m., at Wairarapa College, Masterton. Syllabus: Sunday, to participate in march with R.N.Z.A.F. Band; Monday, mathematics and navigation; Thursday, basic fitting, drill, P.T. and signals . Enrolments: Cadet E. R. Kenny has been enrolled. Cadet N. Stewart is posted to Section A. 1., and Cadets W. Me Arley and T. Hultenberg. Full parades are desired this evening and on Sunday, and all cadets are requested to attend. Duntroon Entrants. After undergoing a course at Army School of Instruction, Trentham, 10 young men, including a Maori, have been selected as the 1943 entrants from New Zealand to the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Australia. Jn announcing their names last evening, the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, said that applications were received from all parts of New Zealand, and in the first instance were the subject of selection by the District Commandants of the three military districts. Those who came up to the required educational and medical standard were thdn subject to a final review by a special selection board.
Inquiry Into Plane Tragedy. The Court of Inquiry into the plane tragedy off Westport was continued al Hokitika yesterday afternoon. All the evidence tended to show that the machine was in good order when it left on the journey. Squadron Leader Hewitt, who has had considerable experience in flying machines of the type lost, stated that in unfavourable weather loss of height could not be regained with only one engine operating, and with the hatch open there would be a certain amount of drag. The evidence concluded, the chairman intimated that as every possible endeavour was being made to salvage the plane tfie inquiry would be adjourned for 14 days to Wellington, ,
