OVER BAD ROADS
EIGHTH ARMY ADVANCE WEST OF TRIPOLI AXIS REARGUARD RESISTING STUBBORNLY. RECONDITIONING OF PORT FACILITIES. LONDON, January 27. The British Eighth Army is still pushing steadily westward from Tripoli and is now several miles beyond Zavia. A 8.8. C. reporter states that the enemy rearguard is putting up a sttibborn resistance and the road is in a very bad state from enemy minings and obstructions. At Tripoli, which is now 30 to 40 miles to the rear of the front, British forces are pushing on the reconditioning of the port facilities. The harbour is not as badly fouled as might have been expected, though there is a considerable amount of damage and it will take time to get things shipshape. In Central Tunisia, the Allies have retaken some of the ground recently captured by the enemy. MOVE ROUND ZUARA FURTHER PROGRESS INDICATED. LONDON, January 27. A communique from Cairo states that yesterday troops of the Eighth Army were in contact with enemy rearguards west of Zerir, which is south-west of the port of Zuara. . (Zuara is about 60 miles west of Tripoli). Air activity was not on a large scale.
