TO BE CONSCRIPTED FOR WAR SERVICE DECISION OF FEDERAL CABINET. ADDITIONAL POWERS TO DIVERT LABOUR. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) CANBERRA, This Day. Australian women are to be conscripted for military service. This decision, by the full Cabinet, has been announced by the Federal Premier (Mr Curtin). Legislation will be introduced in Parliament to amend the Defence Act to permit a compulsory call-up of women for all auxiliary services, to begin immediately. Greatly increased powers have been given to Australia’s Director of Manpower, Mr W. C. Wurth. They include: (1) Authority to direct labour to the channels where it is most needed. (2) Power to call up women for compulsory employment. (3) The right to approve or reject the call-up of men for Allied Works Council or other undertakings requiring labour. Previously the Manpower Department had no power to divert labour from one job to another considered more important. In future, Mr Wurth will have power to decide where any man or woman in Australia shall work.
