WHEAT HOARDING
CAUSING SHORTAGE IN INDIA ACTION BY GOVERNMENT SHIPMENTS AND DISTRIBUTION. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 24. A communique dealing with the food situation in India, which was issued in New Delhi today by the Government of India, says: “The Government is aware that wheat has been in particularly short supply, while the prices of other grains have risen considerably. The Government believes that these shortages are due less to the loss of Burma and other war conditions than to hoarding by producers .dealers and consumers alike, and there is littlb danger of the people of India having to undergo any serious reduction in their normal requirements if these supplies can be equitably distributed. “The Government, therefore, is able to announce that substantial shipments of wheat reaching India in the next few months will be allocated under Government orders to the deficit areas, where Government agencies will supervise the distribution at reasonable prices to the ultimate consumers. Steps are being taken to prevent further hoarding. The Government agencies are also empowered to purchase and distribute other grains,
