Mrs R. Russell, Chapel Street, Masterton, has received word that her son, Pilot Officer Trevor Hicks, has been promoted to Flying Officer. The death occurred at Miramar on Sunday of Mrs Frances Ellen Hayden, wife of Mr Charles Frederick Hayden, of Featherston, at the age of 80 years. Mr and Mrs James Watson, Pownall Street, Masterton, announce the engagement of their daughter Olga Lucille, to John Stronach Blackler, son of Mrs and the late Mr Owen Blackler, Pleasant Point, Timaru. The University of New Zealand announces the following Masterton passes in the Entrance Examination additional to those published yesterday:— J. G. Blackwood, W. G. Deller, G. F. Gair, N. W. Jacobsen, K. W. Mills, D. McGregor, I. J. Robertson, A. A. Scott. Mr. R. McKeen, M.P., took his seat yesterday as a Wellington City councillor for the first time since his appointment to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Councillor L. S. McKenzie. He was welcomed back to the council table by the mayor and councillors. Councillor McKeen is the only Labour representative ?on the council. One of the pioneers of South Taranaki, Mr. John Thomas Quin, died on Saturday at his home on St. John’s Hill, Wanganui. Going to Taranaki about 60 years ago, he took up a bush section on the Boylan Road, between Eltham and Hawera, and made it one of the best improved farms in the district. With his sons, he'continued this work' till about 10 years ago, when he and Mrs. Quin retired to live in Wanganui. The farm has been for many years the site of the Eltham Golf Ciub s course.
