Mrs Morpeth, Wellington, is staying with Mrs Stanley Lamb, Kuripuni. Miss Cruickshank, Cole Street, Masterton, is staying at Whangai-Moana Beach Miss Thelma Major, Upper Plain, is spending the holidays in Marlborough Sounds. Mrs J. K. Welch has returned to Masterton from a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs R. Latham, Masterton, have returned from a holiday spent at Napier. I Mrs S. McLachlan, Rangitumau, is I visiting her sister, Mrs H. Sharpies, Island Bay, Wellington. Miss Mary Kane, Essex Street, Masterton, is at present spending a holiday at Wellington and Paekakariki. Mrs R. Thorne and her daughter, Miss M. Thorne, of Masterton, are spending a holiday at New Plymouth. Mr and Mrs R. V. Hatch have returned to Masterton after a visit to Christchurch where they attended the Hatch —Doreen wedding. * Mrs A. Forrest, Essex Street, Masterton, has received cable advice that her son, Gunner K. E. Forrest, has arrived safely at his overseas destination. The death occurred suddenly on Saturday, at the residence of her daughter, at Petone, of Mrs Mildred Taylor, of Opaki, Masterton, at the age of 63 years. The funeral took place in Wellington today. In connection with the diploma in fine arts preliminary examination held in December, Joan L. Manson, of Masterton, passed in drawing from common objects and in painting from still life. The death has occurred at Wanganui of Mr William Marmaduke Smith, aged 87 years. He was for many years in the employ of the Bank of Australasia and was manager in Featherston, Marton, New Plymouth and Wanganui. ■ Mr Smith had been living in retirement for some years. He took a keen interest in the Wanganui Museum, and was on its committee at the time of his death. He is survived by a son, who is farming in North Auckland, and a daughter, Miss Inez Smith, who is matron of the Craigholm Hospital in Hawera.
