EGG MARKETING
IN WAIRARAPA DISTICT POOLING OF SUPPLIES. EFFECTIVE AS FROM TODAY. Under the Egg Marketing Emergency Regulations, 1942, two, special egg marketing areas in the Wairarapa have been declared. The North Wairarapa area includes all land lying within a four-mile radius from the Post Office, in each of the following towns: —Masterton, Pahiatua, Mauriceville, Alfredton, Pongaroa and Tinui, together with the area lying within an eight-mile radius from the Eketahuna Post Office. The South Wairarapa area includes all land lying within a four-mile radius from the Post Office in each of the following towns:— Carterton, Greytown, Martinborough, Featherston and Pirinoa. In the North Wairarapa area the Masterton Egg Floor and in the South Wairarapa area, the Carterton Egg Floor have been appointed as the wholesale distributors respectively, and both floors will operate under the authority and direction of the Minister of Marketing and Agriculture, Mr Barclay. In each of the areas, all retailers, including pastrycooks, hotels and restaurants, will from today obtain their eggs through the distributors named or their agents. The formal notice, which was advertised in Saturday’s issue, also requires producers desiring to sell their eggs in the special areas, and who have available eggs in quantities of 30 dozen. or over to deliver them to either the Carterton or Masterton floor, according to the location of their poultry runs, or to the agents appointed by either of the main distributors. SMALL PRODUCERS. ‘iSteps have been taken,” said the Minister, “to give every encouragement to small producers who would not in the usual course have 30 dozen eggs or over available in one delivery.” Arrangements in conjunction with the Internal Marketing Division have been made for receiving depots spread throughout the whole of the areas, and eggs in quantity of less than 30 dozen may be delivered to either of the Carterton or Masterton floors, or to any of the depots, where they will be paid for immediately. In this way, domestic producers who have surplus eggs can sell them without undue inconvenience for distributing in the marketing area. PRICE FOR EGGS. The price paid for eggs in this category either at the main floors or through the sub-collecting depots will be assessed in relation to the ruling price order, less -Jd per dozen to cover depot charges, and any other costs involved, such as transportation, etc. Reimbursement to the sub-collecting depots foi' costs involved will be made by the main floors. The order in no way restricts sales of eggs by producers direct to consumers for their own use, provided the sale is made on the premises where the eggs are produced, and delivery is also taken at this point. The Masterton and Carterton egg floors will operate as the only wholesale delivery service, insofar as Masterton and Carterton are concerned. j DELIVERY DIFFICULTIES. The Minister stated that, owing to obvious difficulties in regard to the supply of benzine and tires, it would not be possible to provide a complete delivery service to all the towns in each of the special areas, and therefore arrangements had been made for those other retailers requiring to purchase eggs in their own town- to arrange for the purchase through the subrcollecting depot appointed in their district. The Minister asked that once any arrangements had been made in this respect, retailers were not to change from one source to another, thereby assisting in the general application of the regulations over the whole of the territory. The only deviation from this procedure, the Minister went on to say, was in respect to Pahiatua, where any persons desiring to purchase eggs for sale by retail were required to purchase their supplies through the Pahiatua Egg Circle. PURPOSE OF ORDER. The Minister stated that the purpose of the order was to enable all the eggs available for distribution in both the marketing areas to be pooled, so that priority deliveries for hospitals, invalids, armed forces, shipping, etc., could be made, and the balance made available to all retailers’ shops throughout the areas on an equitable basis. Owing to the change-over in distribution, it is probable that some small degree of disorganisation will be encountered, but any retailer who may be overlooked is asked to communicate immediately with the wholesale distributor in their particular area, or to communicate direct with the Internal Marketing Division, Egg Marketing Section, Wellington. At the commencement, the Minister said, all eggs for sale by wholesale in Masterton and Carterton would be graded in accordance with the principal Egg Marketing Regulations, but he was hopeful that as the organisations became established and the facilities became available, graded eggs would be introduced in the other towns. In the meantime, these towns would continue as in the past to sell their eggs as ungraded.
