NEW HORIZON OPENED

SAFER CHILDBIRTH WITHOUT PAIN. PROMISING TESTS IN NEW YORK. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, January 21. The American Medical Association journal says that Drs Robert Hingson and Waldo Edwards, of the United States Public Health Service Hospital, Staten Island, have reported a new method of providing painless and safer childbirth. The method was tested on 589 cases, involving 586 live births, with no maternal complications or deaths. The method consists of the continuous injection of a solution of metycaine into the lower tip of the spine, called continuous caudal analgesia. Physicians said it provided the maximum comfort for the mother and minimum risk to her and the child. They added that they believed continuous caudal analgesia opened a new medical horizon.
