PERSONAL

The friends of Mr and Mrs H. M. Hansen, Tiraumea, will be pleased to learn that there is a slight improvement in the condition of their daughter, Pearl, who has been seriously ill.. An American seaman, Norman Miller, who is now convalescing in New Zealand after being wounded during operations in the Solomons, and who had earlier seen fighting service in the Mediterranean, has recently been the guest of Mr and Mrs H. E. Pither, Lansdowne. As a small memento of his visit, he has been given by his hosts a copy of Mi' Charles Bannister’s “Early History of the Wairarapa.” The little book takes added interest, and value from the fact that it bears the author’s autograph, appended to a Maori greeting (with an English translation), as well as an expression of good wishes to the United States and its people from the Mayor of Masterton (Mr T. Jordan) who contributed a foreword to Mr Bannister’s book. Sixty-five years of married life were marked by Mr and Mrs H. H. Taylor when they celebrated their platinum wedding yesterday at their residence in Khandallah. Mr Taylor, who is a retired officer of the Bank of New Zealand, was born in Leicestershire, England, 87 years ago, and joined the bank in Auckland in July, 1873, at the age of 17. He retired in December, 1919, and during that time served the bank in various capacities. He was appointed manager of the Inglewood branch at its inauguration, and subsequently was manager of a number of branches throughout the North Island. Mrs Taylor was born at Mongonui, North Auckland, and has been known as a keen tennis and golf enthusiast. She is 85 years of age. Mr and Mrs Taylor were married in Auckland. Their son resides in Auckland, and their only daughter, Mrs W. F. L. Ward, is living in Wellington.
