GREYTOWN
EUCHRE AND DANCE I SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The euchre party and dance held in the Greytown Town Hall last night was most enjoyable. Visitors from all parts of the valley were present. Members of the Papawai Tribal Committee were responsbile for organising the gathering, and are to be congratulated on the success achieved. Just before supper the Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, expressed the thanks of the committee to all those who had assisted. Mr Horton also congratulated the Maori people of the district on their splendid patriotic spirit. Major Carter, commander of the South Wairarapa Home Guard units, extended his congratulations to the organisers of the gathering. Mr J. F. Thompson reminded the members of the committee that they were worthy descendants of the early Maoris of the Wairarapa. The exploits of the Maori Battalion overseas would go down in history. The Maoris of the Wairarapa were well represented overseas, and those at home were regularly sending away parcels. Lieutenant H. Manihera, Maori recruiting officer for the Wgirarapa, also congratulated the committee. He referred to the splendid efforts made by the Maori people in assisting in the increase in production. The euchre prizes were won as follows: —Ladies, Mrs G. Te Whaiti, Mrs V. Harris and Mrs Hood; men, Mr S. Matthews, Corporal A. Butler and T. Karaitiana. Corporal Butler handed his prize back to the funds. Mrs Ashton’s orchestra supplied the music, and extras were played by Messrs S. Te Tau and G. Te Whaiti. Miss George and B. O'Neale won the statue waltz,-and the Monte Carlo dance went to Mrs Harris and partner. The ladies’ committee, under the direction of Mrs E. Pirere, supplied the supper. Maori girls from Papawai in costume sang several Maori songs, and responded to many encores. TOWN HALL “GO WEST YOUNG LADY.” “Go West Young Lady,” an outstanding western musical comedy, featuring Penny Singleton and Glen Ford, and “One Million 8.C.,” a stirring story of early life on earth, will comprise the chief attractions at the Town Hall tonight.
