BOWLING GRADY MEDALS COMPETITION. (“Times-Age” Special.) McLeod and Higgison (s), Grey town, challengers, last evening played the holders, Simmonds and Sorensen (s) for the Grady Medals. The visitors played more consistent bowls than their opponents. At the Bth end the scores were even, 5 each. From then on to the 18th end, the Greytown pair scored 19 points to Carterton’s 3. The last 3 ends went to Carterton, two singles and a two, and the game ended McLeod and Higgison (s) 24, Simmonds and Sorensen (s) 12. On Tuesday evening next F. Harrington, of Greytown, will play W. Sorensen, holder of the Pragnell Cup. The following were the results of games played in the progressive pairs competition:—Geo. Steven and Hughan (s) defeated R. Daysh and Callender (s), 23/19; Colson and Barber (s) beat Foss and Hawkei' (s), 25/13; Beaven and Riggs (s) beat Taylor and Hart (s), 24/16. BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card tourney of the Boy Scouts Committee was held last evening. There was a large attendance, and the prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mesdames Edwards 1, Page 2. Men: Mesdames Herdman 1, M. Ticehurst, junr., 2. OBITUARY MR CHARLES THOMPSON. Another old resident of Stratford, Mr Charles Thompson, died on Monday evening. Mr Thompson had not enjoyed good health for the past two years and the end did not come unexpectedly. Mr Thompson, who had attained the age of nearly ninety-three years, was born at Peterhead, Scotland, and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1864 in the ship, Wild Duck. He landed at Wellington in January of that year and then moved to the Marlborough Sounds, where the family engaged in farming and sawmilling. While resident in the South Island, Mr Thompson married Miss Minnie McMaster, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James McMaster, of the Lower Valley, Wairarapa, and moved with his wife and young family to the Manawatu district 48 years ago. They later made their home in Taranaki, where Mr Thompson farmed until he retired in Stratford 28 years ago. Mr Thompson was keenly interested in bowls and was made a life member of the Stratford Bowling Club. He was also connected with the Presbyterian Church. Mrs Thompson died eight years ago. Mr Thompson is survived by foui’ sons and three daughters. There are also six grandchildren. Mr Thompson’s youngest brother, Mr Allan Thompson, Carterton, also survives him. During the last war Mr Thompson’s four sons ’served, the youngest being killed in action in France. His .eldest son died during the influenza epidemic. Personal Items. Mr T. G. Underhill, who is an inmate of the Masterton Hospital, is making good progress towards recovery. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday after a long illness of Mrs Elizabeth Monaghan, widow of Mr John Monaghan, aged 82 years. Mrs Monaghan was well known in Carterton, having resided in Somerset Road for many years and afterwards in Rhodes Street. She was held, in high esteem by a wide, circle of friends in Carterton. “Lucky 43” Art Union. In the “Lucky 43” Art Union drawn yesterday two prizes came to Carterton. A. Herrick won £lO and “V” for Luck, won a £5 prize. Air Force Band Concert. At a meeting of the Carterton Patriotic Committee, over which Mr D. L. Taverner presided, final arrangements for the visit of the Air Force Band to the showgrounds, Carterton, on Saturday, January 30, were made. A dance will be held in the State Theatre in the evening. Members of the band will be entertained at afternoon tea on the day of the concert. REGENT THEATRE SUSPENSE AND THRILLS. Suspense and thrills will be provided tonight in the outstanding drama, “The Penalty,” starring Edward Arnold and Lionel Barrymore. The other feature, “The Big Store,” is a picture full of laughs with Tony Martin in the leading role.
