REFUGEE PLANES

DESTROYED BY JAPANESE AT BROOME AFTER EXODUS FROM JAVA LAST YEAR. MANY WOMEN AND CHILDREN KILLED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, January 19. The story of the Japanese air attack on flying-boats carrying refugees from Java at Broome on March 3 last year has been released. At least 15 flyingboats, the occupants of which werd mostly women and children, were destroyed and the death roll was heavy. Broome had been used as a base for British and Dutch machines bringing refugees to Australia. Zeros concentrated on the flying-boats, diving low to pick off each in turn. They did not attack the town of Broome itself, but raided aircraft on the local aerodrome before flying off.
