Anniversary Day Holiday.

The position in Masterton as to the closing of the shops or otherwise on Anniversary Day next Friday is still obscure. A meeting of the Masterton Retailers’ Association is to be held on Monday morning at 11 o’clock to discuss the matter. All retailers are urged to attend. Fatality on Ship. Apparently overcome by fumes yesterday in part of an overseas ship in Wellington, the chief refrigeration engineer of the vessel, Mr H. D. Jones, lost his life. A waterside worker, Mr W. Pressler, who endeavoured to rescue Mr Jones, was also gassed, but he was got out of the danger zone about half an hour before Mr Jones could be removed. •
