THREAT OF STRIKE
AT SHORT NOTICE MADE BY LOCOMOTIVE MEN IN BRITAIN. ULTIMATUM TO MINISTER OF LABOUR. (Ey Telegraph—Press Association.) (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) LONDON. January 15. The executive of the Locomotive Men’s Union has notified the Minister for Labour (Mr Bevin) that a dispute exists within the industry and requested that steps be taken, under tho Employment and National Arbitration Order, to give directions in connection therewith and stating that unless the Minister intervenes within 24 hours, a strike will be called. The dispute results from locomotive men’s dissatisfaction that the recent general award of an extra five shillings weekly to railwaymen should include a four shillings weekly increase previously granted to locomotive men. The locomotive men approached the Ministry of Labour on December 31, after which it was stated that the Ministry djd not respond to the approach in the manner the locomotive men had a right to expect. The locomotive men then narrowly defeated a move to strike immediately. About 65,000 locomotive men employed on all the main lines are involved.
