A FINE OFFICER
DEATH OF MAJOR I. A. HART. Writing from the Middle East to Mr H. H. Daniell, of Masterton, BrigadierGeneral Sir H. E. Hart, makes the following reference to the death of his. nephew, Major I. A. Hart, who was . fatally wounded in action in the Western Desert: — “So we have lost poor Irvine, and it was a very sad blow. You and I, . with out past experience, know the risk our chaps in fighting units undergo every 24 hours of the day. The New Zealand Division is definitely a fighting one. To date it has been in more engagements than any other division fighting for the United Nations. lam particularly sorry for his wife and parents. They always suffer the most and feel such a blow harder and longer. He had a magnificent reputation, and had the knack of gaining the men s admiration and esteem. LieutenantColonel John Russell (son of General Russell) who was Irvine’s commanding officer for a time, and has since himself been killed, told me one time that. Irvine was one of the best officers he had met.”
