AWARDS FOR VALOUR

MADE TO NEW ZEALANDERS IN MIDDLE EAST. (Official War Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) CAIRO, January 11. The following immediate awards to five members of the Second N.Z.E.F. are announced: — Distinguished Service Order: Lieu-tenant-Colonel J. M. Mitchell; wife, Mrs L. S. Mitchell, Wellington. Lieu-tenant-Colonel J. F. R. Sprosen; next-of-kin, Mrs A. H. Sprosen, Hawarden (relationship not stated). Lieutenant N. F. Gardiner; wife, Mrs M. G. Gardiner, New Plymouth. ' Military Cross: Captain A. M. Caughley; father, Mr R. Caughley, Wellington.

Military Medal: Lance-Sergeant D. M. Hatherley; father, Mr S. H. Hatherley, Wanganui. Lieutenant-Colonel Mitchell in civil life was a member of the draughting staff of the Public Works Department. He enlisted in October, 1939, and left New Zealand in 1940. He. is now commanding an anti-tank regiment. Lieutenant-Colonel Sprosen sailed with the first echelon and was wounded in June, 1941. He now commands a field regiment. Before his enlistment in October. 1939, he was a school teacher employed by the Canterbury Education Board. Lieutenant Gardiner entered camp in February, 1940, and went overseas early in 1941. His civil occupation was farm appraiser with the Public Works Department. Enlisting in November. 1939, Captain Caughley left New Zealand early in 1940. He was mentioned in dispatches last year and reported wounded in November, 1942. Before enlist-

ment he was on the staff of the Bank of Australasia. Lance-Sergeant Hatherley, who is 25 years old. left New Zealand with the first echelon. He was employed by a firm of Wellington solicitors.
