Mrs R. C. Drummond, Lansdowne, is a visitor to Wellington. The Hon W. E. Barnard, Speaker of the House of Representatives, is visiting Canterbury. Misses Noeline and Mary McLaren, Masterton, have been spending the week at Paraparaumu Beach. The Hon J. G. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture, accompanied by Mr R. B. Tennent, director of primary production, returned from Christchurch yesterday. The Misses J. and E. Palmer, Longbush, and Mrs J. Booth and family, “Middle Run,” Carterton, have returned from a holiday at Oriental Bay, Wellington. The engagement is announced of Hugh, eldest son of Mr and Mrs A. J. Daysh, Masterton, to June, only daughter of Mr W. A. Jones, Mt. Albert, Auckland. The Hon Arthur Cook. M.L.C., has been selected by vote as the New Zealand delegate to a conference of representatives of trade unions throughout the British Comomnwealth, which is to be held in London on April 12. The appointment of Mr E. J. Fawcett, M.A. (Cambridge), to the position of Director-General of Agriculture, was announced yesterday by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Barclay. The Minister said that Mr Fawcett’s practical experience of farming before the war, his wide range of activities in the department and the Government service, and his academic qualifications had equipped him fully for his new position. Ten New Zealanders, serving in the Royal Air Force, are listed in the 1943 New Year honours, having been mentioned in dispatches for distinguished services. In all cases these officers joined the Royal Air Force before the outbreak of war. Those listed are: Acting Group Captain S. C. Elworthy, D. 5.0., D.F.C., A.F.C.; Wing Commander C. Broughton; Wing Commander H. I. Dabinett; Acting Wing Commander E. H. McHardy, D.F.C., and bar; Squadron Leader R. T. Chisholm; Acting Squadron Leader F. H. P. Gauvain; Acting Squadron Leader A. H. Rose; Flying Officer F. A. E. Cramp; Warrant Officer A. W. Powell; Warrant Officer G. A. Wiffin.
