ROAD TRANSPORT
CHARGES IN MASTERTON COURT. NEED OF OBSERVING REGULATIONS. The need of road operators observing the load and speed regulations in view of the tire and petrol situation was stressed by Inspector W. G. Milne of the Transport Department in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning. Transport Wairarapa Ltd. were fined £2 and 10s costs on a charge of overloading and Herbert Trass was fined £3 and 10s costs on a charge of having exceeded the speed limit of 25 miles per hour for the class of vehicle he was driving. Mr J. Macfarlane Laing, who appeared for Transport Wairarapa, Ltd., said that his company operated a fleet of 50 vehicles and in the past twfo years there, were only two charges of overloading brought against the company. The company was largely in the hands of the drivers as far as loading was concerned. The company had instructed the drivers that they were not to overload.
“The company is on the horns of a dilemma. It is trying to save petrol and tires without overloading,” said the Magistrate, Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. He pointed out that the Transport Department could prosecute the drivers rather than the company.
